How secure is your organisation?
1st October 2008
This month’s top 3 security blunders
Security breach – 1
Number one on our list of security breaches this month is the story of the Oxford IT Manager who bought a computer on eBay that contained confidential customer information from American Express, NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland. Read a full report from the Daily Telegraph.
Do talk to Riverbank before you dispose of old computers. We can ensure they are security-erased and we can advise you on their disposal to ensure you comply with current regulations.
Security breach – 2
Just a few days earlier came the news that contractor PA Consulting had lost a data stick containing details of thousands of prisoners. Data should never have been copied to the data stick – it was a breach of company and Home Office rules. It cost PA Consulting a lucrative contract and caused potentially enormous damage to its reputation. Find out more from the BBC.
If you need to control where your confidential client data goes, call Riverbank. We can help with physical protection and encryption.
Security breach – 3
And just in case you need another reminder of the vital importance of protecting confidential information, refresh your memory of another blunder by a firm working for the government. This one was details of prison officers stored on a computer hard drive. It was lost over a year ago but the loss only recently came to light. More, if you can bear it, can be found on the BBC news web site.
